What Water Treatment Does a Bore-Water Home Need?

Published 2 September 2026 3 min read Reviewed by the Pristine Water Systems Sunshine Coast team
Short answer

There is no universal bore-water filter package. Treatment should be selected after testing the actual water and understanding its intended use, flow rate and seasonal behaviour. Depending on results, the system may need sediment control, pH correction, iron or manganese treatment, specialised media, disinfection — or no treatment for a parameter that is not present.

Why bore water varies

Groundwater chemistry reflects local geology, bore construction, depth, recharge and pumping conditions. Even nearby bores can differ. Water may also change with season, rainfall, bore use or infrastructure condition.

Common investigation areas include:

  • pH and corrosivity
  • Electrical conductivity and dissolved solids
  • Hardness and scale potential
  • Iron and manganese
  • Colour, turbidity, taste and odour
  • Microbiological indicators
  • Metals or other parameters relevant to the site and use

This is why choosing equipment from colour or taste alone is unreliable.

Test first, design second

Start by defining the decision: drinking-water suitability, staining, scale, irrigation compatibility, odour, corrosion or appliance protection. Select a laboratory package that addresses that question. Treatment can then be designed around the results rather than a generic sales bundle.

For example, low pH may require neutralisation, but the correct media and sizing depend on chemistry and flow. Iron or manganese treatment may require oxidation and suitable filtration. UV may address microbiological risk under suitable conditions but will not correct minerals, salinity or pH.

Why ongoing maintenance matters

Media exhausts, cartridges load, UV lamps age and bores change. A system that performed well at installation can deteriorate if servicing is missed or source quality shifts. Retesting may be appropriate after treatment changes, unexpected symptoms or significant source changes.

Frequently asked questions

Can you tell what treatment I need from orange staining?
Staining may suggest iron, but testing is needed to understand concentration and other chemistry that affects treatment design.
Does reverse osmosis solve every bore-water issue?
No. Reverse osmosis has specific applications, pretreatment needs, waste streams and maintenance requirements. It should not be assumed to be the default whole-house solution.
Where should a bore-water sample be collected?
The sampling point depends on whether you are assessing the raw bore, stored water or treated water. Ask the laboratory before collection.
